Melanie Wagner to stay at Union
Goalkeeper’s New Deal:
1. FC Union Berlin can continue to count on the services of Melanie Wagner in the future. The goalkeeper has extended her contract and will remain with the club.
Safe Hands Through Promotion Year
Melanie Wagner moved from VfL Wolfsburg II to Berlin-Köpenick in the summer of 2022. The shot-stopper immediately established herself as the starting keeper and played 47 Regionalliga games in the next two years. In her first season, she played all 26 league games, conceding 21 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets. She was able to better this strong record again in the 2023/24 promotion and double winning season. In 21 games, Wagner was only beaten five times, and she kept 17 clean sheets. Union’s women not only celebrated promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, but also lifted the BFV Pokal.
Wagner has appeared in two competitive matches so far this season. The 22-year-old kept a clean sheet in both the 0-0 draw with current league leaders 1. FC Nürnberg on matchday 2 and the 1-0 DFB Pokal win over RasenBallsport Leipzig.
Views on the contract extension
‘I'm very happy about the contract extension and that I'll continue to wear the Union jersey,” said Wagner on the signing of her new deal. “We've achieved a lot in the past months and can still achieve a lot together. We'll continue to work hard in the next weeks and months and want to be successful in the second half of the season to reach our goals.’
Meanwhile Union’s director of women’s professional football, Jennifer Zietz, had this to say on the keeper. ‘Melanie was a great support for our team in the promotion season and did a great job coming in for Cara in the two matches in the first half of the season. She still has a lot of room for development, and I am very happy that she will continue to be with us.’
