A Look Back at the Recent Internationals:

Union’s Women in Action for Their Countries

In the last international games of the 2024/25 season, Tomke Schneider, Korina Janez, Eleni Markou and Athanasia Moraitou were on the road for their respective national teams. All four of them played in both games.

The active players

Tomke Schneider was on the winning team in their international friendly in Murcia, Spain, with the German U23 national team. Kathrin Peters' team beat the Netherlands 3-0 in the semi-final to reach the final. Schneider was substituted on after 73 minutes in the game against the Oranje. In the final against Norway, which ended goalless after 90 minutes, Schneider was brought on after 70 minutes. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out, the centre back was the fourth player from her team to step up, confidently converting her spot-kick. In the end, Germany won 6-5.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian national team with Korina Janez were in Nations League action. Having already had won the first two games, two more victories followed for Slovenia against Turkey. In front of their home crowd in Ljubljana, they won 3-0, with Janez coming on as a substitute in the 72nd minute. The return match in Turkey was won by a narrower margin of 1-0. Union's number 27 came on during stoppage time.

The Greek national team, for which Eleni Markou and Athanasia Moraitou were again nominated, are playing in the same group of the Nations League. The Ethniki met the Irish national team twice and were beaten twice. In the first game, there was a clear 4-0 defeat at home in Iraklion. Moraitou and Markou were both in the starting line-up and were substituted after 72 and 77 minutes respectively. The clash in Dublin was a much closer affair, which Ireland managed to win 2-1. Markou and Moraitou were in the starting line-up again, with the latter being substituted at half-time. Eleni Markou captained her national team in both games.
