The Women’s Third-Last Home Game of the Season:

Union’s Women to Host FC Ingolstadt

Following the international break, the women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin will be back in action on Sunday, 13 April 2025, when they host FC Ingolstadt 04 at home. Kick off at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is at 14:00

The lie of the land

FC Ingolstadt 04 celebrated a 3-0 home win against bottom-of-the-table SC Freiburg II before the international break, thereby extending their lead over the relegation places to seven points. The Schanzers, who have been playing in the second division since 2019, can therefore cautiously plan for another year in the 2. Bundesliga.

Union, on the other hand, suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Eintracht Frankfurt II two weeks ago. Having already lost to the Eintracht’s U20 team in the first half of the season, Union missed out on their chance for revenge. Nevertheless, they still occupy second place in the table and enjoy a seven-point lead over third and fourth place.

Ingolstadt picked up important points in the battle against relegation by beating fellow strugglers SG 99 Andernach and SC Freiburg II in March. The club from Upper Bavaria had previously only managed to pick up a single point from their first four matches after Christmas, meaning their lead over the relegation places had temporarily shrunk to three points.

The wins against Andernach and Freiburg were also their first wins under the leadership of the new head coach Benjamin Stolte. The Austrian, who previously worked with LASK in the Austrian Bundesliga, took over the role in Ingolstadt at the turn of the year. Miren Catovic had resigned in November after two and a half years at Ingolstadt and is now coaching at FC Viktoria 1889 Berlin. During the winter transfer period, he was joined by Ingolstadt's regular defender Katharina Krist in Berlin-Lichterfelde

FC Ingolstadt 04 have proved to be much stronger away than in front of their home crowd this season. Only eight points have been picked up on their own turf, together with Bayern München II and SG 99 Andernach, the worst home record in the league. However, they are in 6th place in the away table with 14 points. FCI have so far managed four wins in ten away games, which could prove to be an immensely important asset in the battle against relegation.

The 5-0 win in the first leg was Union’s highest 2. Liga Bundesliga win at the time, in what was their first ever duel with FCI. Eleni Markou put the guests in the lead after just three minutes, before her Greek international colleague Athanasia Moraitou and Dina Orschmann joined her on the scoresheet before half-time. Sophie Trojahn and Pia Metzker added to the lead in the second half.

Union's head coach Ailien Poese will have to do without Maria Cristina Lange, Leonie Köster, Sophie Trojahn, Ida Heikkinen, Katja Orschmann and Nele Bauereisen on Sunday.

In recent months, Ingolstadt have repeatedly created good chances and scored goals through their fast and variable play from deep,” was Union’s head coach, Ailien Poese’s assessment of her opponents on Sunday. We want to stop that and win the ball back consistently. We want to be patient but purposeful in our own phases of possession and use them to create and take goal scoring opportunities.”

The Stadion An der Alten Försterei will open its gates and ticket office at 12:30. On Sunday, ticket areas 1 and 2 will be open. Tickets for the game are available for purchase and at all Union’s Zeughaus stores, as well as online

To avoid waiting times at the entrances, please arrive in good time. There are a few parking spaces left in the car park in front of the main stand, as well as at the ball sports hall on Hämmerlingstraße. The parking fee is 4 for both.
