1. FC Union Berlin are a possible 90 minutes away from securing a place in the DFB Pokal final after beating FC St. Pauli 2-1 in tonight's quarter-final match.

Urs Fischer's team will go into Sunday's semi-final draw after Andreas Voglsammer's 75th-minute winner secured Union's win.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh put the home side ahead after 21 minutes but Sheraldo Becker managed to equalise with the last chance of the first half.

Heading into the last-eight match, Union had progressed with a memorable 3-2 derby win at the Olympic Stadium against Hertha. Meanwhile, FC St. Pauli claimed a surprise win at home to Borussia Dortmund at the Milerntor in Hamburg. In the ranks of Timo Schutz's side was attacking-midfielder Marcel Hartel who helped Union achieve promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018-19.

Both teams wore armbands with peace signals as everyone showed a moment of solidarity with people in Ukraine impacted by war. A statement read: "Football stands for peace and community. Football builds bridges, it brings brings people together and promotes understanding between peoples. Football overcomes borders, but it does not exclude. Anyone who uses violence, who violates people and human rights, leaves this community. He does not share the values of sport. Our values. We have learned from history that war means suffering, hatred and misery. And that there must be no war. The DFB and its clubs condemn the belligerent attack on Ukraine. We stand firmly by the side of the people on the ground."

After a goal and an assist in the second half against Mainz on Saturday, Sheraldo Becker started high on confidence. A shot from the Dutchman nearly put Union ahead after two minutes. Union won a succession of corner kicks as the team from Hamburg started under the cosh. St. Pauli's young defender Marcel Beifus stepped out of the defensive line and tested Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow from range. Beifus had the difficult task at the other end of handling Taiwo Awoniyi who made it double figures for the season on Saturday. Awoniyi turned the defender inside-out on 15 minutes but fired straight at Dennis Smarsch. The promotion chasers in the 2.Bundesliga took full advantage of their first and only serious sight of goal in Köpenick. A nicely-taken free-kick was laid off to Kyereh on 21 minutes and the forward smashed low into the corner of Rönnow's goal. The advantage gave the away side something to hold on to, backed by 900 travelling fans from northern Germany. Urs Fischer's side, however, showed the ideal reaction, putting Smarsch's box under serious pressure. Somehow Niko Gießelmann couldn't turn home a brilliant cross from Christopher Trimmel on 23 minutes as the left-back was caught in two minds of how to put the ball into the net. Becker's turn and shot on 31 minutes forced a good save from Smarsch who tipped the ball over his crossbar. The Dutchman was Union's saviour at the end of the first 45 minutes as a searching long ball saw Awoniyi get a flick on to send the ball in behind the St. Pauli defence. Goalkeeper Smarsch misjudged the clearance and Becker hooked the ball into the empty net to send the teams in level at the break.

What a start from Union after the interval as Timo Baumgartl threatened down the left-wing. The defender's smart footwork and delivery set up Awoniyi but somehow the striker couldn't direct the ball towards goal. Becker came up with some creativity on 55 minutes but neither Awoniyi or Christopher Trimmel could score. Substitute Andreas Voglsammer was awarded the Goal of the Month for his acrobatic effort in the win over Hertha in the last 16. The striker immediately caused a threat after replacing Awoniyi after 65 minutes. Voglsammer was hauled to the ground minutes later as the referee waved away claims from home players and supporters for a penalty kick. The next chance which came to Vogi wasn't passed up and the striker took the ball in his stride to slot past Smarsh and give Union a 2-1 lead. Captain Trimmel nearly made it a second on 78 minutes but his shot took a wicked deflection and went wide of the target. As expected, the 2.Bundesliga outfit were not going to give up this opportunity in the German Cup and they asked questions of Union towards the end of the game. Marcel Hartel struck wide of the target after taking up a good position at the edge of the box while Leo Paqarada hit past the post from further out. In the first minute of stoppage time, Voglsammer came inches away from securing a 3-1 lead but the ball agonisingly came back off the post. St. Pauli returned the pressure and won themselves a few corners to throw up goalkeeper Smarsch in added time. A scrappy situation gave the visitors shouts for a penalty but there was no rule breaking on Union's side. Fischer's men doggedly held on and will go through to the final four of the German Cup with a place in the final potentially just 90 minutes away.
