Back Where it all Began:

Kevin Volland to Return to TSV 1860 München

1. FC Union Berlin and Kevin Volland have agreed to end their partnership in the summer, with the 32-year-old attacking all-rounder to return to the club of his youth, TSV 1860 München. Volland came through the ranks at the Löwen and played for all the youth teams before making his professional debut there. In total he made 120 appearances for the Munich club.

A goal against Madrid that will live long in the memory

In the summer of 2023, Volland moved from French first division club AS Monaco to Berlin-Köpenick. He proved his worth in his very first Bundesliga appearance for Union, when against 1. FSV Mainz, having just come on as a substitute, he set up the fourth goal in a 4-1 win in the 91st minute.

Even in difficult phases, the experienced attacking player could be relied upon. After a long losing streak in the 2023/24 season, he scored the late 1-1 equaliser against FC Augsburg before scoring again just a few days later in a 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

His goal in the final group match of the UEFA Champions League against Real Madrid will also remain unforgettable. After Frederik Rönnow saved a penalty from Luka Modrić, Volland reacted quickly to a long ball from the Dane and put Union 1-0 up with a well-placed finish.

Volland made 32 competitive appearances for Union in his first season, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

This season – his second - however, has been marred by injuries for the striker. He has made only four appearances so far, and the former German international will return to Munich in the summer – to the club where it all began for him.

The views on the departure

“It was always great to play for Union – in front of these special fans, with this unique atmosphere,” said Volland on his transfer. “Even though it wasn't always easy on the pitch, I felt very comfortable here and gained a lot of important experience. Now I'm looking forward to another chapter at the club where I grew up. I wish Union all the best for the future.”

“Kevin made an important contribution during his time at Union – his experience was particularly valuable during a challenging period for the club,” said Union’s director of men’s professional football, Horst Heldt, meanwhile. “We would like to thank him for his commitment and professionalism and wish him every success at 1860 and all the best for the future.”
