The Captain Stays on Board
Christopher Trimmel Signs New Deal
Team captain Christopher Trimmel will continue to write his own headlines at 1. FC Union Berlin. Just as he did in January 2020, the 35-year-old full-back has signed a new contract - though this time under the Spanish sun in Campoamor - meaning he will now be looking forward to his tenth season at Union this summer.
Success story continues
Trimmel moved from Rapid Wien to the then second-division club in Köpenick back in 2014, taking over the captain's armband from Felix Kroos in the summer of 2018. In nine seasons as an Unioner so far, the Austrian international has played 286 competitive games and has been a intrinsic part of the most successful period in the clubs history.
Such as in 2019 when the longed-for promotion to the Bundesliga was delivered, or in 2020 when that status was secured well before the end of the season. Or in 2021 with the qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League, or finally last season, finishing 5th place in the Bundesliga and with it securing qualification for the Europa League.
Now, the story will need another chapter.
When he first signed his contract in 2014 the then 26-year-old spoke about his decision to join Union, saying, "They are building something there with thought and care, and I can be a part of it all."
And now he can not only look back on the past few years, but also ahead to his tenth season as a Unioner.
"When I came to Berlin more than eight years ago, the clear goal was to be promoted to the Bundesliga at some point, and I was convinced I would experience something great with Union. The last few years have been incredibly emotional and formative for the club, but also for me personally. I'm very happy to continue to be a part of, and to shape all of that."
Oliver Ruhnert, director of professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin said of the deal,
"Christopher has known the club for many years, he is an absolute identification figure for both other players and fans. His sporting achievements speak for themselves and we are delighted to have found a good basis for his future with Union."
