Paul Seguin is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin for the 2. Liga’s FC Schalke 04. 

Midfield engine and derby hero

Seguin was the first transfer announced by 1. FC Union Berlin at the end of the 2021/22 season when he moved to Berlin from the then relegated Greuther Fürth, alongside Jamie Leweling. 

Having made his debut against Bayern München in the fifth game of the season, it took only two more games for the midfielder to rack up his first assist. In the 2-0 home win over VfL Wolfsburg, he chipped the ball elegantly over the top to Sheraldo Becker who scored Union’s second of the day. The victory meant that Union would defend their lead in the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. Six more weeks at the top followed. 

Seguin can also look back happily on one of the biggest occasions of all, the derby against Hertha BSC. The Magdeburg native scored his first and only competitive goal for Union against their city rivals, having had the favour repaid by Becker who slid the ball through for him to finish this time. He added to that goal a further three assists in 23 games for Union.

Views on the transfer

"What I have experienced at Union this year is indescribable,” said Seguin on his time in Berlin. “We have achieved something historic as a team and I am very proud of that. The values that the club represent are unique and have also helped me as a person. That's why it's also very difficult for me to leave. But now it's time for me to take a new path. I will always remember Union and especially the incredible support of the fans."
