Lennart Grill signs on loan

1. FC Union Berlin have signed 23-year-old goalkeeper Lennart Grill on a loan deal from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen. The loan agreement includes a purchase option.

A European Championship winner with Germany's U21 national team, Grill developed into a professional footballer at 1. FC Kaiserslautern following a switch earlier in his career from Mainz. He made 59 appearances at the Betzenberg before signing for Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. His debut in the Bundesliga came against Freiburg and he made another three appearances before the season was out. A year into his Bundesliga adventure, the 1.91m-sized keeper went out on loan to Brann in Norway where he made 15 appearances. His U21 success with Germany has seen him play next to the likes of Paul Jaeckel and Nico Schlotterbeck who will be familiar to the Union family.

"I'm really looking forward to the transfer to Berlin," said Grill about his new challenge. "For me, it doesn't just mean playing for a special club. It's also about constantly improving, integrating myself into the team quickly and doing my part for a successful season."

"Lennart is a very interesting young goalkeeper who has great potential. He will play an important role in the squad and make our team stronger in the upcoming Bundesliga season," added Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin's Managing Director for Professional Football.
