Janik Haberer's Deal Extended
The All-Rounder from the Allgäu
Janik Haberer will continue to stay at 1. FC Union Berlin, and the 30-year-old will remain an important part of Union’s squad in the future.
In the middle, left or right – you can rely on Haberer
In the summer of 2022, Haberer left SC Freiburg after six years and moved from the Breisgau region to the capital. He made his debut in the opening game of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, when he set up Sheraldo Becker to give Union a 2-0 lead in the derby over Hertha BSC, which Union went on to win 3-1. He ended his first season in the Union red and white with seven goals in 45 competitive games and the historic qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
His second season in Köpenick brought fewer minutes on the pitch, partly due to injuries, butalso coincided with a difficult time for the club. After being knocked out of the Champions League, Union fought against relegation until the very last day of the season.
In the deciding game against his former club SC Freiburg, however, Haberer emerged as the match winner. After Kevin Volland’s penalty was tipped onto the post, he finished off the difficult rebound in injury time to secure a 2-1 win and keep his team in the Bundesliga.
In his third year at 1. FC Union Berlin, Haberer has started five of the seven competitive matches he has played for new head coach Bo Svensson so far and, mostly impressing in the right-back position rather than in his usual midfield spot.
With his tireless commitment, Janik Haberer will continue to play a crucial role for 1. FC Union Berlin in the future.
The views on the decision
‘I'm very happy that we're continuing on this path together,” said Haberer on the signing of his contract extension. “After a turbulent last season, we have grown even closer together as a team and a club, and I want to continue to be a part of this positive development. I feel completely at home here and I'm convinced that Union is and remains the right club for me.”
Horst Heldt, director of men's professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, is also happy to have the new deal, stating: “A player like Janik is a real asset for every team and every coach. His versatility makes him a valuable member of our team. With his experience, he not only offers tremendous support for the club but also our players, and his consistently good performances make him a role model.”
