Sustainability

Preamble

“Social engagement is deeply rooted in our club. The initiatives for our projects come equally from fans, players, employees, and sponsors. With the founding of our foundation “UNION VEREINT. Shoulder to Shoulder” we have already taken an important step in bundling our commitment. To sharpen the sense of responsibility within our organization and to develop new areas of focus, we established a sustainability department in the club in 2023.”

Strategy

For many years, 1. FC Union Berlin has been aware of its social responsibility and is committed in various ways under the motto "The strong help the weak".

The growing social significance of football opens up options for us as a club that extend far beyond the sport itself.

Social engagement

For many years, Unioner have been actively engaged both professionally and voluntarily in various social issues, with a passion that extends far beyond the football pitch. With the founding of our foundation "UNION VEREINT. Schulter an Schulter" in 2016, we consolidate our diverse commitment. True to our motto „The strong help the weak," we support people in our environment who are in need of assistance.

Health & Education

That health is an important asset is continuously brought to the attention of each and every one of us. 1. FC Union Berlin regularly engages with partners and organizations for education, participation, and donation projects. In the past, for example, typification campaigns were held together with the German Bone Marrow Donor File (DKMS), information was provided about organ donation in collaboration with the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), and DRF Luftrettung offered training in lay resuscitation at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Environment & Resources

The German Environmental Aid awarded 1. FC Union Berlin in 2016 for its environmentally friendly waste management. At Stadion An der Alten Försterei, the focus is on waste reduction, and the club primarily uses reusable cups for drinks as well as large containers for mustard and ketchup.

The sausage is served in a bread roll and not on a paper plate, thus saving hundreds of thousands of disposable cups and single-use dishes annually for the Eisernen.

In 2013, 1. FC Union Berlin took over the first official stream sponsorship for a section of the Wuhle. The stream, which runs along the stadium grounds, is thus also under the protection of the Eisernen with the goal of maintaining the ecological quality of the waterbody.
