Union Travel to Play Ingolstadt

On Sunday, 1. FC Union Berlin's women's team will travel to play FC Ingolstadt 04 in the 8th match of their 2. Bundesliga season. Kick off at the Betriebssportanlage Ingolstadt-Mitte is at 11:00.

The lie of the land

Ingolstadt finally recorded their first win in this season's 2. Liga, having become the last to do so. But with their 1-0 victory over the recently promoted SC Freiburg II. they are now up to 12th in the table with six points.

Union, meanwhile, not only suffered their first defeat of the season, but also their first in a year and a half when they lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt II at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Antonia Halverkamps's goal in the 71st minute was not enough to save a point in the end of a heated encounter. After losing top spot, Union are currently third in the table.

The opponents

FC Ingolstadt 04 have been playing in the 2. Bundesliga since their promotion from the Regionalliga Süd in 2019. After finishing a strong 6th in their debut season, the main focus in recent years has been on avoiding relegation. Since 2022, Ingolstadt have twice finished 11th and most recently 10th.

After six matchdays, FCI were still the only team without a league win, though they had picked up points against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0), SC Sand (2-2) and SG Andernach 99 (1-1). However, last weekend's success ended a long run without a win for the team of head coach Miren Catovic, who has been in the job since 2022. The last time Ingolstadt won in the Bundesliga was on 14 April 2024. In fact, it was only their second competitive win in the 2024 calendar year.

Ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season, Ingolstadt had already been knocked out of the first round of the DFB Pokal where the Schanzers lost 3-2 to third-division outfit Kickers Offenbach. After Ingolstadt had come from 2-0 down in the first half, Offenbach scored the winning goal in the 90th minute. Ingolstadt had at that point not won in 13 competitive games.

The personnel

Union's coaching staff, who are once again missing head coach Ailien Poese due to illness, will continue to be without Maria Cristina Lange, Katja Orschmann and Sarah Abu Sabbah on Sunday.

The coach's views ahead of the game

"After the home defeat to Frankfurt II, we made a few adjustments during the training week and are full of confidence going into this away game," said Poese's assistant, Sven Gruel, during midweek. "FCI are an experienced team who celebrated their first win of the season against Freiburg II last weekend. We will go into the game in Ingolstadt with a good game plan and then want to take the three points home with the right determination."
