Union Sign Pia Metzker
New Strength for the Women's Defence
1. FC Union Berlin have signed Pia Metzker from 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam II for the new season. Despite her youth, the 19-year-old full-back already has already accrued plenty of experience at the professional level.
In the summer of 2019, Metzker moved from Magdeburger FFC’s academy to the 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam’s U17s, the defender soon finding herself promoted to the second team of the former heavyweights. After Turbine II were relegated from the 2. Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season, the team managed a direct return to the top flight the following year, a season in which Metzker contributed three goals. Pia played a total of 51 competitive matches for Turbine Potsdam II, including 34 appearances in the 2. Liga.
She is assured of seeing at least one familiar face because while there, Metzker also played 15 times together with Union’s winger Sophie Trojahn.
"I'm really looking forward to playing for 1. FC Union Berlin next season and to a new and exciting chapter in my life,” said a happy Metzker on the move. “I want to support the players with my experience, and give all my strength and passion to achieve our goals together, and for us to celebrate success. Straight after the first talks with the people in charge, I felt right at home and am very happy to become a part of this club."
"Pia is a young player who has already played in the 2. Bundesliga and knows competitive sport,” said Union’s director of women’s and girls’ football, Jennifer Zietz. ”These are two aspects we want to refine within the team over the coming season. She is ambitious and will continue to develop together with our team."
