Union with a point to prove, 3-0 up in twenty minutes.
Even if the crowd at the Fritz-Lesch Sportplatz were content to lounge around in the tranquil warm spring weather – it was a quintessential lazy sunny afternoon - Union’s head coach, Ailien Poese was in no mind to rest on her laurels as she prepared her side to take on a Bischofswerda side who had previously inflicted Union’s first defeat of the season. She made just two changes to her team following last weekend's 5-0 away win at FC Carl Zeiss Jena II, the injured Celine Frank and Nour Youssef, replaced by Pauline Gericke and Hannah Kratz in midfield and up top respectively.
The game started furiously. Within seconds of the kick off Dina Orschmann had the ball in the net, but the linesman’s flag was just as quick, she was a hair’s breadth offside. But Union were in no mind the give their guests any respite, and it took only quarter of an hour for Lisa Heiseler to score, bundling the ball over the line after the Bischofswerda keeper, Laura Werner, parried Dina Orschmann’s shot only as far as the skipper. Zita Rurack made it two within moments with a towering header from a corner.
It was Orschmann’s twin, Katja, who turned provider for union’s third after 25 minutes, her speculative long-range shot bouncing off the bar where right-back Luise Wildner finished for Union’s 100th goal of the season.
Union show no let up, Heiseler, Trojahn and Spolaczyk increase the lead
Union kept up their relentless pressure on the Bischofswerda goal in the second half, and it took only another ten minutes for Lisa Heiseler to score her second of the day, and her 23rd of a stunning season, following Rurack’s mazy run and simple pass. Union’s fifth came two minutes later, and was almost a carbon copy of the fourth, but this time it was Naika Reissner - playing a deeper role at left-back than usual – who played a beautiful ball through to a sliding Sophie Trojahn, who had an impressive day on the right-hand side, to make it 5-0.
Union had more chances, through Heiseler and Dina Orschmann, notably, but it was the substitute Elisa Spolaczyk who rounded things off in the 69th minute to make it 6-0 for Union.
With only two games to go, Union remain in 2nd place in the Regionalliga Nordost table with 59 points, four points behind Viktoria Berlin who could wrap up the title with a win next week in Jena. Türkiyemspor, meanwhile, are now two points behind Union in third place after only drawing in Babelsberg.
The coach’s views on the game
"It was another very commanding performance, even though we made a bit of a change in the starting line-up today,” said a satisfied Poese following the final whistle. “Nevertheless, it was a very strong performance and again, of course, a big thanks goes to the fans today."
The outlook
Next Sunday, 21 May 2023, will find union’s last home game of this superb season as they host Blau-Weiss Hohen-Neuendorf to the fritz-Lesch Sportplatz. Kick off against the side in 12th is at 13:00.
