Traditionally, on May Day 1. FC Union Berlin celebrate the annual FrauenFußballFeiertag, when  the training pitches of Hämmerlingstraße are transformed into a multi-coloured playground for football tournaments, hands-on activities and other chances to get together. For organizational reasons, however, Union's family day for young and old has to be cancelled this year.

"In recent years, we've been pleased to see a steady increase in the number of visitors; last year, more than 3,000 people came to the final friendly at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei," explained Lutz Munack, Director of women's, girls' and amateur football at Union. "Unfortunately, we don't have suitable space for such a large event this year. That's why we won't be able to host it again until next year."

Since last summer, the training pitches in Hämmerlingstraße have been undergoing renovation work. In addition to a new full-size, heated pitch, a functional sports building for the Bundesliga squad is to be built there.

Neither is the Oberspree training center in Bruno-Bürgel-Weg available as an alternative venue. Although the pitches and facilities there have already been put into operation, a major event with a large number of visitors cannot take place due to other unfinished works on the open spaces.

Munack concludes: "It was not easy for us to cancel, because we know how much fun our employees and guests have had every year. We very much hope to be able to welcome everyone back for the next edition of the FrauenFußballFeiertag in 2025."
