Union win 4-1 at Magdeburg

1. FC Union Berlin ran out 4-1 winners at 1. FC Magdeburg on a sunny afternoon at the MDCC-Arena.

Early goals from Kevin Behrens and Andreas Voglsammer gave the Bundesliga side a dominant advantage in the second pre-season match of the summer. While Magdeburg threatened under the sun, it took them until 33 minutes when an own goal from Paul Seguin cut the deficit. Keita Endo and Tim Skarke came off the bench to add a third and fourth goal in front of 7,955 supporters.

1. FC Magdeburg: Reimann, Lawrence (Sechelmann 70), Ceka (Sliskovic 81), El Hankouri, Krempicki, Müller, Bell Bell, Atik (Halbouni 70), Bitroff (Stappmann 81), Conde (Rieckmann 70), Ito (Scienza 70)

1. FC Union Berlin faced 2.Bundesliga opposition on Saturday afternoon in Magdeburg following Christian Titz's side successful promotion-winning campaign. Urs Fischer freshened up the constellation following the 3-1 win at Viktoria Berlin on Wednesday. Captain Christopher Trimmel returned, while left-back Tymoteusz Puchacz was in after his time on international duty. Paul Seguin was handed his first start and there were extra emotions for the midfielder – his father Wolfgang scored for Magdeburg in the 1974 UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup final win. As Sven Michel did in midweek, Union started sharp and went ahead within the first minute. A cross from Levin Öztunali found Andreas Voglsammer at the back post and the Union number 9 headed past Dominik Reimann. A mistake after eight minutes gave Kevin Behrens the chance to finish off and put Union into a two-goal position. Magdeburg demonstrated their commitment to attacking football in the 3.Liga title win last season and it was little surprise Titz's men had punch in the forward positions. Frederik Rönnow made a point-blank intervention from Connor Krempicki on 10 minutes. In the 15th minute, there was a penalty shout against Ito but the referee waved away the claims. Baris Atik thumped the ball back goalwards but it was ruled out after Jamie Lawrence was in an offside position. The home side won a penalty kick on 31 minutes and Union were breathing a sigh of relief as Atik hit the post. Union struggled to regain control of the passage of play and Magdeburg hit back from a corner with the ball deflecting off Seguin and beating Rönnow. The final opportunity to add to the scoreline fell to the Köpenick club with Voglsammer missing a double chance.

Urs Fischer picked a whole new starting XI for the second half in Magdeburg, featuring Julian Ryerson and Genki Haraguchi who had previous international commitments. The selected team saw Lennart Grill take position between the sticks for the first time, while Danilho Doekhi, Milos Pantovic and Tim Skarke were involved from the new summer signings. Youngster Aljoscha Kemlein followed up with his impressive performance on Wednesday with more appearance time in Magdeburg. Three minutes into the second half, Sven Michel found space in behind the home defence. The striker did exceptionally well, cutting the ball across the goalmouth but Endo was unable to adjust his footwork to finish. The Japanese substitute made no mistake, however, on 54 minutes. Michel passed to Haraguchi on the left, the Japan international midfielder picked out his compatriot and Endo finished off with a left-foot strike. Union's left-winger shot straight at Riemann from a promising counter-attacking situation as Endo took advantage of his time on the field. Debutant Grill had little to occupy his first appearance in Union colours and took away a clean sheet. Union added a fourth with two minutes left to add some shine: Tim Skarke opened up the legs to beat his opponent for pace and the former Darmstadt player finished under Riemann.

Union's pre-season continues on Wednesday night at the Eintracht-Stadion in Braunschweig with a 18:00 kick-off against Eintracht Braunschweig. Three days later, 1. FC Union Berlin welcome Bohemian FC from Ireland as we officially open up the 2022/23 season at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
