Union take on Feyenoord in the De Kuip

1. FC Union Berlin will make the trip to Rotterdam on Thursday night as Urs Fischer's side look to progress further on Matchday 3 of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stages.

Review — The last matches

After a win at home to Maccabi Haifa, 1. FC Union Berlin go to Feyenoord, looking to keep up the positive results in Group E. Goals from Andreas Voglsammer, Kevin Behrens and Taiwo Awoniyi secured the Matchday 2 win over the Israeli champions to keep Union in the fight with Slavia Prague and the Dutch side to qualify beyond the group phase.

In the Bundesliga, Union continued to march up the table with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg. Mark van Bommel's side enjoyed strong periods in the game at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, but it was Union who showed the clinical edge in the final third. Taiwo Awoniyi was played through by Genki Haraguchi in the third minute of the second half and the Nigerian fired in his sixth league goal of the campaign from close range. Urs Fischer's side continued to take the game to the Wolves who are competing in this season's UEFA Champions League. Substitute Sheraldo Becker made the game safe with six minutes to go, heading in from Andreas Voglsammer's cross.

Feyenoord — Opposition Report

In Feyenoord, Union will face one of the most recognisable names in European club football. The Dutch side have tasted European glory, winning the European Cup in 1970 and the UEFA Cup in 1974 and on home soil in Rotterdam in 2002. With 15 Dutch league titles, Feyenoord are a powerhouse of Dutch domestic football. Despite a 2-2 draw at home to Waawijk and defeat at Vitesse, Feyenoord have made a decent start to the Eredivisie. Arne Slot's side are in fifth but just six points off Ajax at the top of the league and five off second-placed PSV Eindhoven. In the summer, Feyenoord added well to the squad as they look to push further on in European competitions – some notable moves were Alireza Jahanbakhsh signing from Brighton, while Gernot Trauner joined from Austrian club LASK Linz and Guus Till came on loan from Spartak after a spell in Germany with SC Freiburg.

Feyenoord — The coach's view

"The stadium here has an excellent atmosphere," said Urs Fischer at the pre-match press conference in Rotterdam. "You need to be prepared for that, but I think we can also enjoy it. Feyenoord have started well, doing not bad in the league championship and in the group and are a very well-organised team. They are a really compact team and have a good mixture of combination play and long balls. Their biggest strength is their ability to win the ball back, then they do well in transitions and score a lot of goals from these moments. We need to have that in our mind and have an answer to it."

Meanwhile, Feyenoord head coach Slot said of Union: "The opposition always have their worst game when they play against Union. They always make it difficult for the opponent to create many chances."

Personnel

1. FC Union Berlin will be without Marvin Friedrich for the third match of Group E following the return of a positive coronavirus test yesterday. The defender went straight into quarantine after consultation with the medical staff and local health authorities.
