Union take on Feyenoord at home
UEFA Europa Conference League:
1. FC Union Berlin host Dutch side Feyenoord on Thursday, the fourth Group E match of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stages. The match at the Olympic Stadium will kick-off at 21:00 local time.
Review — The last match:
Union's home unbeaten run in the Bundesliga came to an end on Saturday as Urs Fischer's side lost 2-5 to Bayern Munich. The Köpenick club had previously gone 21 games in Germany's top flight without a loss at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. However, Julian Nagelsmann's side proved to be too strong on the day. Union trailed by three goals — a double for Robert Lewandowski and one for Leroy Sane — before Niko Gießelmann fired one back before the break. Union's second-half showing delighted the 16,509 fans inside the Alte Försterei, but Bayern and Manuel Neuer were able to hold on their lead. Kingsley Coman struck a fourth before Julian Ryerson came off the bench to score his first Bundesliga goal for the club. Thomas Müller restored Bayern's three-goal advantage in the last five minutes. In the UEFA Europa Conference League, Union are at the foot of the group after three matches. But two of Union's last three matches will take place on home turf, starting with Feyenoord on Thursday. Fischer's side picked up their only points thus far with a 3-0 win over Maccabi Haifa in Charlottenberg.
Feyenoord — Opposition Report:
Since Arne Slot's side ran out 3-1 winners in Rotterdam, Feyenoord have been on a winning streak with two back-to-back wins in the Eredivisie. Despite going behind at Cambuur, Feyenoord recovered to win 3-2 with goals from Bryan Linssen, Fredrik Aursnes and Tyrell Malacia. On Sunday, Feyenoord won the city derby at Sparta Rotterdam, but had to wait until the 92nd minute to get the winning goal through Cyril Dessers. Despite having one match outstanding, Feyenoord have moved into fourth spot ahead of Vitesse — four points off league leaders Ajax.
Feyenoord — The coach's view:
Urs Fischer said: "Feyenoord is on a good way. Won last two games. We had too many bad phases in the last game, but also some good. We need to take those. We need to show that over 90 minutes and then there's a chance to win. Important with Max that it is not a structural injury, just some small things which hold him back. We look at it every day. He's recovering. Every other player is fit and available to play. I'll repeat. It's normal. Our compactness and organisation is a part of our style. It's about showing that over 90 minutes and not just in certain phases of games. And then you have the ball. We weren't too bad with it in Rotterdam. Need more efficiency. Against Bayern there were more opportunities and you need to take them. You don't know how many you get. Need to use them."
Personnel:
Max Kruse is unavailable for selection and is undergoing rehab in Köpenick. Urs Fischer confirmed that he has the rest of his squad to choose from.
