Union sign Liverpool striker Awoniyi
Return to Berlin:
1. FC Union Berlin have completed the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Liverpool. The 24-year-old striker is back in Berlin following his departure from the Stadion An der Alten Försterei a few weeks ago.
Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015 from the Imperial Academy in Nigeria. He gained first-team experience on loan at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen (Netherlands), KAA Gent and Royal Mouscron (both Belgium). The striker spent the 2019/20 Bundesliga season on loan at Mainz and made 12 appearances. Last summer, Awoniyi made the move to Union where he broke through. He scored his first goal for Union at the end of November against 1. FC Köln — and he would go on to score four more until the end of 2021. An injury interrupted the striker’s run of form, but he returned to action for the last two games of the campaign, celebrating Union’s qualification for the Europa Conference League.
“After lots of loan moves in previous years, I want to finally come and have a home. I owe so much to Union, so it makes me happy and proud to be back here. It’s fantastic to continue on the great path with the club. I will give everything to quickly pick up where I was before my injury,“ said Taiwo Awoniyi.
“We got to know Taiwo last season and we became sure of his qualities. His robustness, his dedication and his unconditional willingness to learn and develop were the deciding factors for us to give everything to make this transfer happen. We greatly appreciate the efforts of everyone involved to find a suitable solution,“ said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director of Professional Football.
Awoniyi will travel down to the team's training camp in Tirol on Tuesday and he will wear the number 14 shirt for the 2021/22 campaign.
