Union sign Genki Haraguchi from Hannover

1. FC Union Berlin have strengthened further ahead of the 2021/22 season with the addition of 57-time capped Japanese international Genki Haraguchi. The 30-year-old will move at the end of his current contract with 2.Bundesliga side Hannover.

Haraguchi's career kicked off in Japan with Urawa Red Diamonds where his emergence attracted interest from Germany. He joined Hertha in 2014 and spent time on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Instead of returning to Berlin, Haraguchi signed for Hannover. Overall, the forward has scored 22 goals in 217 games in German and European football.

"I had a great time in Hannover. But now I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga again next season. Union have proven in recent years what is possible when you work hard and as a team. I'm looking forward to the city and the Stadion An der Alten Försterei and I'm convinced that I can help the team to stay in the league again next season," added Haraguchi.

"Genki Haraguchi is a player who has known German football for several years and has convinced us with his performances. He is a technically skilled, often goal-scoring footballer who can bring us creativity and ball security. That's why we are delighted that he has decided to join us," said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin's Managing Director for Professional Footbal.
