Union’s Internationals
A Look at the Men in Midweek Duty

Six Union players were in action for their countries during the first men’s international break of the calendar year. Some earned minutes on the pitch, while others qualified for upcoming tournaments.
The active players
Guadeloupe's Jérôme Roussillon played the full 90 minutes in both games of the double-header against Nicaragua, helping his team to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the sixth time this summer.
Defender Leopold Querfeld had to sit on the sidelines in the UEFA Nations League play-offs and watch as the Austrian team missed out on promotion to League A after a 1-1 home draw and consequent 2-0 defeat against Serbia. The 21-year-old was in the squad for both games but did not play.
The Hungarian team, featuring Andras Schäfer, will also be competing in League B of the UEFA Nations League in the coming season. They lost 3-1 and 3-0 to Turkiye in both games. Schäfer scored the Hungarians' only goal to bring them level in the first fixture, but this was not enough to prevent relegation.
László Bénes and the Slovakian national team missed out on promotion to League B. After neither side managed to score over 180 minutes, their opponents, Slovenia, eventually won the second leg in extra time. The Union midfielder played for 27 minutes in both matches.
Union were also represented in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League Finals. However, despite beating France 2-0 in the first leg, Croatia were ultimately defeated on penalties by the side who beat them in the 2018 World Cup Final, having lost the return leg 2-0. Josip Juranovic watched both games from the bench and was unable to help his team.
The German U20 team with Tom Rothe used the international break for two friendlies. Against Czechia, they ended up winning 1-0, with Union's full-back playing for 45 minutes. In the following 1-1 draw against Portugal, Rothe led his side onto the pitch as captain but was substituted after an hour.
