Monday's game against Lichtenberg was a chance for Urs Fischer to give our valuable game time to those who didn't play much in the 6-0 DFB Pokal win over Germania Halberstadt. Akaki Gogia and Anthony Ujah combined for the opener on 22 minutes, the striker picking up where he left off with his first competitive goal in Union colours on Sunday. Julian Ryerson's return lasted 31 minutes as planned and he was replaced in defence by Florian Flecker. Lichtenberg offered some attacking threat in front of the 2000 crowd but Jakob Busk's goal stayed empty. Sebastian Polter scored a second five minutes before the break.
Eight minutes into the second half, Felix Kroos' corner was headed home by Ujah. Youngsters like Julius Kade, Maurice Opfermann Arcones and Stefan Rankic were given the chance to impress in the final half an hour. A foul in the box gave Lichtenberg a chance to please their own fans, David Hollwitz scoring from 12 yards. But Polter restored the three-goal lead a few minutes later, converting from the penalty spot.
"I saw a good game for my team today. There was a lack of intensity, which was also in the nature of today's friendly match. It was important to give our players 90 minutes of playing practice, that worked today. I liked the approach," said Fischer who now prepares his side for the Bundesliga start on Sunday at home to RB Leipzig.
