Union make trip to Mönchengladbach
Fischer's men on the road:
1. FC Union Berlin are preparing for their first away game of the new season — this Saturday will see the Köpenick club head to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a 15:30 kick off.
Review
1. FC Union Berlin kicked off the club's second season in Germany's top division with a disappointing home defeat to Augsburg. A crowd of 5,000 was permitted to visit the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, but Urs Fischer's team were unable to secure the first three points of the new campaign. Marius Bülter scored with 15 minutes to go to level the scores after Ruben Vargas put Augsburg into a first-half lead. However, the visitors took advantage of some sloppy defending, putting the game beyond doubt with late goals from Michael Gregoritsch and Andre Hahn.
Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach lost 0-3 on the opening weekend at Borussia Dortmund, with the goals coming from Gio Reyna and twice from Erling Haaland.
Opposition
Marco Rose's first season in Germany was a success with his Borussia Mönchengladbach team finishing in fourth and securing a place in the UEFA Champions League. The Foals did so in style and finished just four points off second-placed Borussia Dortmund. The squad remains in tact from last season with just Fabian Johnson, Raffael and Tobias Strobl departing. Gladbach have added extra quality in the wide areas with Hannes Wolf and Valentino Lazaro signing from RB Leipzig and Inter Milan respectively. Gladbach have held on to star performers Denis Zakaria, Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram who will be stiff competition for Union this coming weekend.
Personnel
Union's two currently injured players are Christian Gentner and Anthony Ujah. Fischer gave a thorough overview of the squad's condition at the press conference on Thursday. "All of our other players have trained, some of them have been managed," said the Swiss coach. Keita Endo trained with the squad throughout the week — as have Max Kruse and new signing Taiwo Awoniyi, who completed his switch on loan from Liverpool in the hours after the Augsburg match.
Service
Saturday's match in Mönchengladbach will be played in front of around 10,000 home fans at Borussia-Park in accordance with the regulations in the region.
