Union lose to Unterhaching, draw with Lausanne

On the seventh day of the winter training camp in Spain, the first-team was put to the test against 3.Liga outfit Unterhaching and Swiss side Lausanne.

1. FC Union Berlin 1-2 Unterhaching

XI: Busk; Trimmel, Torrejon (Maloney 22), Hübner, Lenz; Zejnullahu, Schmiedebach, Zulj; Gogia, Polter, Hartel

Union edged the opening periods against the third-tier side, who sit credibly in fifth with 35 points from 20 games. The Bavarians took the lead just after the half hour mark when Stefan Schimmer finished emphatically past Jakob Busk. Sebastian Polter almost equalised before the interval but Nico Pantl reacted well to the striker's header.

Stephan Hain added a second for Unterhaching as the Köpenick club was punished for not taking the chances of their own. Eroll Zejnullahu came close on the hour point with a close-range shot, but in the final half an hour, Urs Fischer's team pulled back a consolation goal. Akaki Gogia showed great feet inside the box and was fouled by Dominik Stahl. Polter stepped up to score, but Union went down to a defeat.

1. FC Union Berlin 0-0 Lausanne

XI: Gikiewicz; Ryerson, Friedrich, Rapp (Schönheim 31), Reichel; Prömel (Opfermann 21), Parensen, Kroos; Abdullahi, Andersson, Taz

Though the second friendly in Jerez would end goalless, Union and Lausanne played at an excellent tempo which saw chances at both ends. Suleiman Abdullahi could have scored after five minutes before Marvin Friedrich's header hit the crossbar on 17 minutes.

After the restart, Ken Reichel's excellent cross found Sebastian Andersson who hit the side-netting under pressure from the Lausanne defence. Lausanne became reluctant to push forward when Union were on top in the second half, but neither side could find the important breakthrough before the end.

"It was good that almost all of our players could get a chance over 90 minutes, and also for Rapp, Prömel and Torrejon, who got their first minutes after their injuries  — that was very important. We had our opportunities in both games, but we have to be more effective in front of goal. Especially in the second game, we had six or seven good chances, but of course there is a certain fatigue among the players. The results are secondary for me, I've seen a lot of good signs and we can build on that," concluded Fischer.
