Union host midweek clash against Freiburg
Final home game:
1. FC Union Berlin will play the final match of 2021 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei with SC Freiburg making the trip to the capital on Wednesday.
Review – The last match:
1. FC Union Berlin suffered just a fourth league defeat of the season so far, losing at newly-promoted Greuther Fürth on Sunday. Havard Nielsen's second-half strike was the decisive moment of the game as Stefan Leitl's team won for the first time in their Bundesliga history at the Sportpark Ronhof. Urs Fischer's side dominated in Fürth but were unable to take advantage of the second half pressure against Sascha Burchert's goal.
Freiburg – Opposition Report:
SC Freiburg and Christian Streich are enjoying an exceptional Bundesliga season with 25 points from 15 matches – two better than Union in the league. Freiburg have lost four of their last five Bundesliga matches including away trips to Frankfurt and Bayern. However, among that, Streich's team showed their quality with a 6-0 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Freiburg led by six goals after 37 minutes with Nico Schlotterbeck rounding off an incredible afternoon for Christian Streich and his team.
Freiburg – The coach's view:
"They are right to be up there. They've been very stable, enjoyed themselves. They haven't changed much. Freiburg are dangerous from set plays and play vertical. I look at strengths and weaknesses, we need to be at our limit," Urs Fischer said at the pre-match press conference.
Personnel
Marvin Friedrich has trained a bit but will miss the match. The defender is likely to be back in time for Saturday's game in Bochum. Laurenz Dehl remains on the sidelines.
