Union host Nürnberg in IFA friendly
Return of fans:
1. FC Union Berlin's annual IFA-sponsored friendly will take place on Saturday at 17:30 when 1. FC Nürnberg make the trip to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The pre-season friendly, presented by the world's largest trade fair, has seen Union host a number of top-class international teams over the years. Last year, ahead of the club's first Bundesliga match at home to RB Leipzig, Urs Fischer's team went down to 0-3 to an impressive Celta Vigo side from Spain.
While there's no international opponent in 2020, the match holds extra significance. On August 7, 1920, SC Union Oberschöneweide, one of the predecessor clubs of 1. FC Union Berlin, inaugurated the Sportpark Sadowa — the current stadium grounds of the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. German champions Nürnberg were the visitors a century ago and will return to Köpenick to mark the special anniversary.
"It's our last pre-season game before the new season and we've set ourselves the goals of keeping things that worked out well and doing better in the area that weren't so good," said coach Urs Fischer. "We have to be well-organised defensively and more dangerous going forward."
Record
1. FC Union's last meeting with Nürnberg was in January 2018 under the management of Jens Keller. Ewerton put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes, but the game ended with three red cards. Toni Leistner and Philipp Hosiner were dismissed for Union, while Edgar Salli also saw red at the end.
IFA Berlin
This year's special edition of IFA takes place in Berlin's exhibition halls. The latest developments in consumer electronics will be presented at the world's largest trade fair between September 3-5. However, with coronavirus restrictions, the event is not open to the public or private guests this year.
