Union down Fortuna Düsseldorf on final day
Three-goal win in Köpenick:
1. FC Union Berlin rounded off the club's first-ever Bundesliga campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Fortuna Düsseldorf to clinch an 11th-placed finish in the final standings.
Anthony Ujah set Urs Fischer's side on the right path after 26 minutes before Christian Gentner added a second early in the second half.
Substitute Suleiman Abdullahi scored in the final minute to consign Düsseldorf to automatic relegation from the Bundesliga after the final-day defeat.
1. FC Union Berlin: Gikiewicz; Trimmel, Friedrich, Schlotterbeck, Reichel; Prömel (Becker 68), Kroos (Abdullahi 62), Gentner; Bülter (Parensen 81), Ujah (Malli 61), Mees (Schmiedebach 61)
Fortuna Düsseldorf: Kastenmeier; Zimmermann, Zanka (Hoffmann 29), Ayhan, Gießelmann (Suttner 62); Stöger, Bodzek (Morales 62); Skrzybski (Kownacki 62), Thommy, Karaman (Zimmer 74); Hennings
Urs Fischer's final starting line-up of the season included five new faces from the defeat at Hoffenheim last weekend. Rafal Gikiewicz took the place of Moritz Nicolas, while Felix Kroos, Christian Gentner, Marius Bülter and Joshua Mees came in to the team. Meanwhile, Fortuna Düsseldorf featured former Union striker Steven Skrzybski who made 136 league appearances during his time in Köpenick. Uwe Rosler's team looked to make an early mark on the match with Kaan Ayhan's header cleared off the line by Gentner. However, Düsseldorf lacked cutting edge and Union were mostly untroubled across the early exchanges. With Sebastian Andersson suspended, Anthony Ujah was handed the main striking berth in Fischer's team and the Nigerian popped up with the opener after 26 minutes. Joshua Mees' volley was struck into a ruck of players and Ujah bundled the ball over the line – his third strike of the campaign. Union challenged the Düsseldorf defence again towards the end of the first-half with efforts from Ken Reichel and Grischa Prömel, but the gap remained at one by the interval.
Neither team would return with any substitutions used but Düsseldorf's plans were thrown out the window when Gentner took advantage of a mistake from Ayhan, slotting with his left-foot into the bottom corner. Fischer turned to his bench on the final day of the season with Manuel Schmiedebach, Yunus Malli and Abdullahi given game time. Fortuna's substitute Markus Suttner came close with a deflected shot which struck the crossbar. Dutch winger Sheraldo Becker was next to cross the white line, while Michael Parensen replaced Marius Bülter with 10 minutes to go. Given Werder Bremen's comfortable victory at home to 1. FC Köln, Düsseldorf threw caution to the wind. Goalkeeper Kastenmeier joined a succession of corner kicks, which led to a number of spaces opening up for Union to exploit. Gentner did exactly that and created the easy chance for Abdullahi to score the last goal of the season for Union in the Bundesliga.
