Union defeat Shenzehn 2-0
Training Camp:
1. FC Union Berlin picked up a first win in 2019, beating Chinese side FC Shenzehn by two goals at the winter training camp in Spain.
First half XI: Gikiewicz; Lenz, Hübner, Maloney, Trimmel; Zejnullahu, Schmiedebach, Kroos; Taz, Polter, Abdullahi
Urs Fischer's men started with a bright tempo and intensity. The Köpenick club moved ahead in the 10th minute, with Suleiman Abdullahi converting a rebound after a close-range shot from Eroll Zejnullahu. Berkan Taz was given a starting position on the left and scored nine minutes later to give the German club a two-goal lead. Shenzehn, a second-tier club from China, had chances of their own with Pa Amat Dibba heading wide late in the half.
Second half XI: Busk; Reichel, Schönheim, Friedrich, Ryerson; Zulj, Parensen, Hartel; Mees, Andersson, Gogia
Union continued to dominate after the restart, despite fielding a completely new side. However, the Berliners failed to take advantage of some promising situations around the box. Robert Zulj set up Marcel Hartel who was thwarted by the Chinese goalkeeper. Michael Parensen scored a few minutes later with a header but the assistant referee adjudged the Union player to be in an offside position. Sebastian Andersson missed two chances in the 76th and 78th minute, while Marvin Friedrich headed over with a few minutes left.
"It was the first test of the new year and I've already seen some good things," said coach Urs Fischer. "We put pressure on the ball and kept our opponents busy. Almost all the players available got some game time and nobody was injured. Now we can get back to work here in the good conditions."
Union Berlin have two more bounce games in Spain – the first against Unterhaching on Friday January 18 and the second against FC Lausanne a few hours after.
