Union claim 4-1 derby win at Hertha

1. FC Union Berlin hammered rivals Hertha 4-1 at the Olympic Stadium to complete the hat-trick of derby victories this season.

Goals from Genki Haraguchi, Grischa Prömel, Sheraldo Becker and Sven Michel secured three more Bundesliga points and a memorable victory in Charlottenburg.

Hertha: Lotka; Pekarik, Boyata, Kempf, Eitschberger (Dardai 46); Gechter, Tousart, Ascacibar (Ekklenkamp 75); Maolida (Serdar 76), Jovetic (Belfodil 21), Darida (Mittelstadt 46)

1. FC Union: Rönnow; Trimmel, Heintz (Oczipka 72), Baumgartl, Knoche, Gießelmann (Ryerson 72); Khedira, Haraguchi (Schäfer 62), Prömel; Becker (Michel 82), Awoniyi (Voglsammer 82)

Urs Fischer's one change for the 11th derby between Union and Hertha was enforced. Paul Jaeckel's yellow card suspension came into play this weekend and he was replaced at centre back by Dominique Heintz. The Köpenick club could count on the support of 12,000 away supporters in the Olympic Stadium – and their presence was felt even before the teams kicked off. Referee Sven Jablonski kicked off on time to round up Saturday's Bundesliga matches, and Union were out of the traps in the fashion we have come to expect. But Union faced a stern foe in Hertha's 20-year-old goalkeeper Marcel Lotka who has taken control of the number 1 shirt at the Charlottenburg club. His incredible first 20 minutes kept a dominant Union team at bay multiple times. Sheraldo Becker and Grischa Prömel were kept out by Lotka inside the first two-and-a-half minutes before Timo Baumgartl's header was brilliantly parried wide by the Hertha keeper. On 12 minutes, Hertha failed to defend their box and Niko Gießelmann fired on target but Lotka pushed away. In the minutes that followed, Lotka reacted to a challenge with Prömel, thumping his chest against the Union midfield player and picking up a yellow card. The goalkeeper who joined the Old Lady from Borussia Dortmund thwarted Taiwo Awoniyi four minutes later in his pursuit of his 18th Bundesliga goal. Felix Magath and Mark Fotheringham have injected some lift into Hertha's fight against relegation with an important win at home to Hoffenheim. They were handed another set back after 19 minutes when Stevan Jovetic came off with a knock – the Montenegrin striker was replaced by Belfodil. The substitution and the rather prolonged delay took a slight edge out of the next period of the match, but Union remained on top. A fantastic run by Christopher Trimmel saw him create a chance for Becker in the box but Lotka made another incredible save. The young keeper couldn't stop Union from scoring on 31 minutes as a former Hertha player headed Union into the lead. Becker lined up a one-v-one situation with Pekarik, crossing dangerously on his left side for Haraguchi who put his body on the line to dive in and head past Lotka. A small heart-in-mouth moment was as threatening as Hertha came before the turnaround – a cross from Tousart was fired wide by Maolida who did his best to break Union down despite having little service to work with. Trimmel headed Becker's cross wide on 41 minutes before the Dutch winger beat Boyata on the break, but coming up short with the finish as Lotka kept the arrears at one.

Magath's side was level after four minutes of football, breaking in behind the Union defence. A cross from Ishak Belfodil was turned into the net by Timo Baumgartl. Boyata headed wide on 51 minutes with the Köpenick club on the back foot for the first time in the game. But the character and bravery of Urs Fischer's squad shone through to regain the lead after 53 minutes. Gießelmann did well in an advanced position to get into a crossing area, picking out Prömel whose header landed in the corner of the net. On 61 minutes, Haraguchi's race had come to an end against his former employers with Andras Schäfer bringing energy to the midfield. Bastian Oczipka marked his 300th Bundesliga appearance on 71 minutes when he and Julian Ryerson were given the nod to replace Gießelmann and Heintz. Union pushed on for the clinching goal with Schäfer trying his luck from distance. It was the Hungarian who played a key role in the decisive third goal to kill the contest. Schäfer broke up play and split the Hertha defence to play in Becker who took advantage of the space and fired past Lotka from the right-hand side of the box. Despite Rönnow's save against Belfodil on 81 minutes, the home team offered little punch. With seven minutes left, Union freshened up the front line with Awoniyi and Becker coming off and Michel and Andreas Voglsammer getting time on the field. A long ball from Baumgartl was taken out of the air well by Michel and the January signing turned and fired home, celebrating his first goal for the club since his transfer to Berlin. The away supporters were in terrific voice throughout across the Marathon-Tor at the Olympic Stadium and both players and fans celebrated a third derby win in a row this season, taking Union's point tally for the season up to 44.
