Urs Fischer's travelling squad was split in two for the friendly matches to come this weekend. The 17-man party left the camp in Bad Wörishofen for the Waldstadion Feldkirch over the border in Austria to take on the side, who finished bottom of the Austrian Bundesliga last season. Union's starting line-up featured Sebastian Andersson for the first time in pre-season, as well as, Julian Ryerson at right-back and Fabio Schneider in midfield, just a few days after signing his first professional contract at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The conditions proved a challenge to both teams with the pitch baked in 35-degree heat. It was the Bundesliga club from Germany who came out of the traps quickest after good results in pre-season against Energie Cottbus, Würzburger Kickers and Dynamo Dresden. Marius Bülter took advantage of his ability to play with both feet, cutting inside on to his left and forcing Benjamin Ozegovic into a steady save. However, WSG Tirol took advantage of their first opportunity at goal in the first 20 minutes to open the scoring. Kelvin Yeboah's pace was a problem for the Union defence, the attacker picking out Dedic from the right and the 35-year-old striker taking his time to slot past Jakob Busk. On 37 minutes, a foul from Marvin Friedrich was punished by the match referee and Dedic stepped up to beat Busk for the second time in the first half.
Union returned from the interval with the same 11 players, while WSG Tirol made three substitutions of their own. Having ended the half with a lot of work, Busk was called into action again around the 55th-minute mark. The Danish goalkeeper showed excellent reactions to push clear a left-footed volley from Smith. Four minutes later, Yeboah's shot from distance was handled by Busk. With all the attacks coming from one direction, the third goal was more likely for the Austrians and Dedic clinched his hat-trick on 63 minutes. Tim Maciejewski, Grischa Prömel, Niko Gießelmann and Lars Dietz were given minutes on the pitch, but there was a mountain to climb for Union in the last half an hour.
The remainder of the Union contingent will be in action tomorrow at 17:30 against Bundesliga rivals 1. FC Köln. The match will be available to view live on our website.
