Union Host Borussia Dortmund
Crucial Matchday in the League
On Sunday, 16.10.2022, 1. FC Union Berlin will welcome fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund to the Stadion an der Alten Försterei. Kick off is at 17:30. In one of the two top matches that day (it's already been dubbed "Super Sunday"), the guests have a slight advantage in that they have had an extra two day's rest after both teams played European fixtures in midweek. Dortmund played in the Champions League against Sevilla on Tuesday, Union beat malmö in the Nations League on Thursday.
The opponents:
In their most recent match in the top flight, though Borussia only managed a draw at home, the joy it inspired (as well as the anger it brought to Oliver Kahn) was much greater than the result would imply. Anthony Modeste saved an important point against record champions Bayern Munich with a header in injury time.
It was the first point they've gained against FCB in almost four years. That this draw was no great accident is reflected in the standings. Dortmund and Bayern both have 16 points, but are still behind Union and Freiburg.
When looked at in terms of tactics, Dortmund's head coach Edin Terzic does not let results affect his thinking too much. Apart from the Bayern game, the 39-year-old has been loyal to his 4-2-3-1, playing a classic double six. The two wingers next to playmaker Julian Brandt play variably, can stick out to the flanks, as well as drifting dangerously into the middle.
The head to head
The clubs have met six times in the Bundesliga. Union won two of those matches, but in the last three games against BVB, have come away empty-handed, conceding a total of nine goals. However Union haven't lost at home in ten, Borussia haven't won away in two in the Bundesliga.
The reunion
International Nico Schlotterbeck, who played 16 games for 1. FC Union Berlin from 2020 to 2021, will face them for the first time in a black-and-yellow jersey on Sunday.
The personnel
Head coach Urs Fischer has the entire squad available ahead of Sunday's match against Dortmund.
The coaches' view ahead of the match
For head coach Urs Fischer, Borussia have recently shown their strong mentality: "I see Dortmund showing a lot of solidarity. They don't give up, they fight to the end. In addition, they have a good mixture of playing ability in the middle, and pace on the flanks. We have to free ourselves from the pressure that Dortmund always exert through their aggressive pressing."
In the pre-match press conference, Dortmund's coach, Edin Terzic spoke particularly of the atmosphere at the Alte Försterei, and warned against any complacency. "Union work hard and very consistently, and the mood in the group semms very good. Everyone knows their role and what's important - a very good mixture, it's how they work successfully. Union are also very effective and creative from set-pieces. We will work on them again today and tomorrow."
