Union Berlin sign Anthony Ujah from Mainz
New in Berlin:
1. FC Union Berlin's Bundesliga squad continues to take shape over the summer and we've added Bundesliga experience to the forward line in the shape of 28-year-old Anthony Ujah.
The Nigerian has enjoyed a hugely-successful career across the globe. He started with Abuja FC and Warri Wolves in his homeland before signing for Lillestrom in Norway. One year later, he joined Bundesliga club Mainz before helping 1. FC Köln back into the Bundesliga between 2012 and 2015. Ujah scored a further 11 goals for Werder Bremen in the season prior to his move to Liaoning in the Chinese Super League. He returned to Mainz after two seasons in Asia and scored four goals last season for the Carnival Club. In 171 Bundesliga appearances, Ujah has scored 51 times with 24 goals in the 2.Bundesliga and five in the DFB Pokal.
"I was able to convince myself about Union on site here in Berlin. The impressions at the Alte Försterei were very positive and so it was clear to me after my visit: I would like to play here. I'm looking forward to an exciting challenge and want to put my experience and my performances at the help of the team in order to deliver a successful season," explained the striker.
"Anthony Ujah is a striker who has proven his class at several clubs in the Bundesliga and scored many goals. We are very happy to have secured such a player for us. I'm absolutely sure that he will be extremely valuable for us with his experience," said Oliver Ruhnert, Director for Professional Football at 1. FC Union Berlin.
Ujah has put pen-to-paper on a deal until June 2022 and the contract is valid for both Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga competitions.
