Simon Hedlund, Kenny Price Redondo and Marvin Friedrich scored the goals as 1. FC Union Berlin won 3-1 at fourth-tier side Chemnitzer FC in Herzberg.

All three goals came in the second half as Urs Fischer's side recorded their first win of pre-season preparations following the 1-1 tie with Carl Zeiss Jena on Sunday.

Union Berlin dominated the early passages of play, with more ball possession than Chemnitz, but without finding a way past Florian Sowade. Given the heat was upwards of 30 degrees at pitch level, referee Henry Müller called for drink breaks every 15 minutes. Sowade made a superb save from Joshua Mees who struck from the edge of the box towards the last quarter of the half. But the Köpenick club couldn't get a breakthrough before the half-time interval.

If the first half ranked low on entertainment value, the second half was extremely high. Union returned from the half at a superb tempo, scoring two goals inside a minute through Simon Hedlund and Kenny Prince Redondo. At the other end, Dejan Bozic headed past Jakob Busk to cut the deficit to one goal. Union remained in pursuit of more goals and great assist play from Berkan Taz teed up one for Marvin Friedrich on 69 minutes. Good chances fell to Christopher Lenz, Cihan Kahraman and Marcel Hartel, but the match ended 3-1.

"I liked the first 10-15 minutes, it had everything in it. After that, I think we stopped working well and got stuck in challenges. You can't win games if you're not ready to fight battles. We mentioned this during the break and it worked out better again in the second half. Of course, there are still a few balls missing from the interplay. These small things do not have the highest priority at the moment, but they are on our list of course," analysed head coach Fischer.

Union are back in action tomorrow at the Bonava Arena (Hangelsberger Chaussee 6, 15517 Fürstenwalde/Spree) with an 18:30 kick-off lined up for a bounce game against Union Fürstenwalde. Tickets are available on location for 10EUR (seat), 8EUR (standing room) and 6EUR (standing room reduced*).
