Trimmel selected as club captain
Team Council & Captain
Christopher Trimmel will be the team captain of 1. FC Union Berlin for the 2018/19 season. Felix Kroos, the current incumbent, will become vice-captain with Marvin Friedrich his deputy. The six-player team council has also been confirmed and will include Michael Parensen, Sebastian Polter and Manuel Schmiedebach.
"The team council is an important committee for me. We had a good exchange between the backroom staff and players on the question of captain and came to this decision together. In the end, the captain must be a person who can represent both sides. On the one hand, he's the extended arm of the coach, but on the other, he has to represent the opinion of the team. I'm convinced that Christopher Trimmel will adequately solve this," said head coach Urs Fischer.
"It was a great honour for me to lead Union as skipper," added Kroos, who passes the armband on this season. "Now we've come to a decision in open discussions that now is a good time for change. I'm happy for Trimmel who will do very well. We, the team council, will do everything we can to support him."
Speaking about his appointment as club captain, Trimmel said: "I'm pleased about the trust of all parties involved and will do everything to fulfill this task. Together with the other senior players, it's important to lead the way so we can be successful as a team. I've done that in the last few years, but as captain, the responsibility is a little greater. I've experienced several captains held in high-esteem in recent years and I'm proud to be able to continue this."
