Taiwo Awoniyi completes Nottingham Forest move
Back to the Premier League:
1. FC Union Berlin's record Bundesliga goalscorer Taiwo Awoniyi has completed his return to the English Premier League and the Nigerian striker will join newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.
The 24-year-old striker arrived at 1. FC Union Berlin from Liverpool on an initial loan deal. His move became permanent a year later as Awoniyi cemented his place in Urs Fischer's team. He was an ever-present last season – all aside from his spell on international duty – scoring 15 goals and becoming the sixth highest scorer in the league last season.
In 65 games for Union, Awoniyi netted 25 times and contributed nine assists to help the club succeed in the Bundesliga.
"I received a huge amount of confidence here right from the start and felt really comfortable," said Awoniyi on his departure from Köpenick. "I had the opportunity to develop here and to celebrate great achievements thanks to my team-mates and the coaching staff. Union will always have a special place in my heart and I'm very proud to have been part of this club."
"It was clear that a player like Taiwo will attract the attention of other clubs with his performances. From a sporting and personal point of view, he is a great loss for our team, which must now be absorbed. We wish Taiwo all the best for the future and thank him for his achievements in the shirt of 1. FC Union Berlin," said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin's Managing Director for Professional Football.
