Steven Skrzybski signs for FC Schalke 04

Steven Skrzybski will leave 1. FC Union Berlin and join Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04. The 25-year-old has signed a deal in Gelsenkirchen until June 30, 2021 after the Royal Blues triggered the purchase clause in his contract.

Skrzybski has been a part of the club since the age of eight, enrolling in the youth academy of Union Berlin in January 2001. He progressed through the ranks to the first-team of his local club, making his professional debut on November 13, 2010 at the age of 17 against FSV Frankfurt.

In recent years, Skrzybski has become a regular and outstanding performer at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. He finished last season as the club's top scorer with 14 goals and five assists in the 2.Bundesliga. In 143 competitive matches for 1. FC Union Berlin, he scored 30 goals.

"Everyone can imagine that this decision wasn't made lightly. Leaving Union is a special step for me and of course my new club plays a very decisive role in this decision. I've never made a secret of the fact that FC Schalke 04 has always fascinated me. Moving there now is the fulfilment of a great dream. I'm incredibly grateful to Union for my football education and years of support. I wish the club and all those who belong to it all the best and lots of success," said the 25-year-old forward.

"This transfer comes as no surprise to us. On the contrary in fact - Steven has earned it with an outstanding season. We wish him every success in this enormous sporting challenge", added the club's newly-appointed Managing Director for the First-Team, Oliver Ruhnert.

"We have tried very hard to keep Steven with us and knew that this was a special situation. Now this has materialised and everyone who knows Steven, knows that this change means a lot to him. I said just a few weeks ago that we respect his decision and will support him, whatever it may be. That is exactly what I would like to do and congratulate him on achieving an extraordinary sporting achievement. Thanks for everything, Stevie, and all the best in Schalke!" said Dirk Zinger, the president of 1. FC Union Berlin.
