Short journey: Union visits Tasmania for a Berlin Friendly
Following yesterday’s 11-0 win at SV HANSE NEUBRANDENBURG, 1. FC Union Berlin heads on the road for friendly against SV Tasmania Berlin. The game kicks off at 3.00 p.m. in Berlin-Neukölln at Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportpark.
SV Tasmania Berlin: A club with a turbulent past
Tasmania’s roots date back to 1900, when the club was founded under the name Rixdorfer TuFC 1900 Tasmania. Numerous name-changes later, the club made an appearance in the Bundesliga during the 1965/66 season – but was relegated at the end of the season with only two wins and four ties out of 34 matches. It was the beginning of a downward spiral, financial and athletic problems resulted in the bankruptcy in 1973. Only a few months later, the club was re-established under a different name, before competing under their current SV Tasmania Berlin in 2011. Today, Tasmania plays in the Berlin-Liga, one of Germany’s sixth leagues.
Union and Tasmania crossed paths in four games so far: one Berlin-Cup game (1993) and three friendlies (1996, 1997, 2006). The team from Berlin-Köpenick won the first two matches 4-1 and 3-1, respectively, before playing the Neukölln-based club to a 2-2 and 1-1 tie.
