Prömel to leave Union for Hoffenheim
Summer departure:
1. FC Union Berlin midfielder Grischa Prömel will end his time at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in the summer and join former club Hoffenheim.
The 27-year-old has spent five seasons in Köpenick having joined from Karlsruhe off the back of a silver medal triumph at the 2016 Olympic Games. Prömel developed through the Hoffenheim academy under the management of now Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. After coming back from injury, Prömel helped Union achieve promotion to the Bundesliga, establish the club in the top division of German football and qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League. In 129 matches for the club, Prömel scored 16 goals and assisted 10.
"Driving into the car park at the Alte Försterei in the morning and meeting the first members of staff who greet you with a smile on their face is something I enjoy every day and I will miss that very much. I have experienced a lot with Union - the club, the fans and the staff - in the last few years. We were promoted together, realised our dream of the Bundesliga and then qualified for Europe. This special time has left a deep impression on me and will remain in my memory forever. Above all, the feeling of community, the mood and atmosphere make the club something unique. I would like to thank all my teammates, the coaches and support staff, all the staff and fans for the best time of my career so far. But there is still a lot to do before I leave and I will give everything to finish this season successfully together with all Union players," said Prömel on his decision to leave the club.
"Grischa has grown together with Union over the years and played a big part in the club's success. But Grischa was not only an important part of the team in sporting terms. We are grateful to him for the time we spent together and wish him above all good health and much success in his further development. Until May, however, we are all concentrating on our goals for this season. I'm sure that Grischa will give everything for Union until the last second," added 1. FC Union Berlin Managing Director for Professional Football, Oliver Ruhnert.
