Herzberg welcomes Union to face Chemnitz
Preview:
1. FC Union Berlin will make the short trip to Herzberg (Brandenburg) on Wednesday for a bounce game against Chemnitzer FC.
Wednesday’s encounter comes after Union’s 1-1 draw with Carl Zeiss Jena, a match which was to celebrate 50 years since the club won the FDGB Pokal. The next friendly has similarly festive reasons — VfB Herzberg 68 are celebrating their 111th anniversary as a football club and 60 years of competing in bowling. Union are part of the club’s history: we celebrated VfB’s 100th anniversary in 2007 with a friendly against Energie Cottbus.
Chemnitzer FC: Between GDR titles, amateur football and insolvency
For the first time 2011, Chemnitzer FC will play in Germany’s fourth division. The Saxons were in the third division for seven consecutive seasons but were relegated last season. In 1966/67, Chemnitzer won their first-ever national league championship. However, fortunes have gone downhill since the 1990s with economic problems forcing the club to declare insolvency in April this year, making survival from the drop all-but impossible with a further nine-point deduction.
David Bergner, who took over as coach in January, is preparing his side for the Regionalliga. His team returned from a break on June 18 and have played three friendlies so far, winning two against FSV Limbach and SV Zehdernick. Bergner is a former professional at 1. FC Union Berlin and made over 200 appearances for the club.
