Haberer signs for Union from Freiburg
Midfielder heads to Berlin:
1. FC Union Berlin have added a second new face to the squad ahead of the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign. The experienced 28-year-old central midfielder Janik Habrerer will make the switch from Freiburg to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei this summer.
Haberer was developed through the academy of Unterhaching before his move to Hoffenheim in 2014. He spent a season in Bochum before returning to Hoffenheim and then earning a switch to SC Freiburg in 2016. Haberer pulled on Freiburg's shirt 169 times in league action, including 157 times in the Bundesliga. In that time in Germany's top division, the 1.89m-sized midfielder scored 11 times and claimed 14 assists. Haberer was called up nine times for Germany's U21 national team and represented his country at the U21 European Championship.
"I was looking for a new challenge and found it in the move from Freiburg to Berlin," said the central midfielder. "The talks with Oliver Ruhnert make me confident that we can play a good role in all three competitions in the coming season. As an experienced Bundesliga player, I want to take on responsibility and put my performance capabilities at the service of the team and the club."
"Janik brings a lot of variability and can play different positions in midfield. In addition, he has conveyed to me in our conversations how ambitious he is. In view of our next season with three competitions, we believe that Janik will bring his experience with consistently good performances," said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin's Managing Director for Professional Football.
