Under the leadership of Christoph Dabrowski Hannover 96 finished the 2020/21 season in 11^th place with 42 points. His replacement, Stefan Leitl, has a clear idea for this new season and, with 14 new players, needs to improve upon that. However, they lost their last match, 4-2, at home to Paderborn.

Ex-Unioner Cedric Teuchert signed for Hannover 96 in January 2022. The 25 year old is a well known face at the Alte Försterei.

The last time the sides met was in the 2.Bundesliga in 2016/17. Union winning at home, 2-1, but losing 2-0 in the corresponding fixture.
