Winter break review: Basel dominant, Union with positive signs
Both clubs have prepared for their respective second halfs with three friendlies. FC Basel started preparations with a 2-0 win over FC Aarau before beating the Puskas Academia of Hungary. The final game against Krasnodar saw Marcel Koller's men run out 2-0 winners with goals from Eder Balanta and Kevin Bua. The Swiss side, whose domestic dominance ended last season to new champions Young Boys, have yet to add any new players to their squad in the January window.
Meanwhile, Union have been in action at their winter training camp in Spain. Urs Fischer's side made easy work of Chinese outfit FC Shenzehn through goals from Suleiman Abdullahi and Berkan Taz. On the double-game day last week, the Köpenick side lost 2-1 to Unterhaching and then drew 0-0 with Lausanne. However, Fischer rounded off the camp by welcoming the positive phases in training that he saw from his players. "The results are secondary for me, I have seen many good impressions and we can build on them," said the Swiss boss, who formerly managed Basel for two seasons between 2015 and 2017.
