"I'm comfortable with Union and here in Berlin"
Marcus Ingvartsen Interview:
Marcus Ingvartsen scored his third Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday as 1. FC Union Berlin claimed a point at Paderborn. The Danish U21 international has found a rich vein of form since establishing himself in Urs Fischer's starting eleven. Christian Arbeit spoke to the 23-year-old, who joined the club this summer, about his start at Union. The full interview is available in the matchday magazine or AFTV.
CA: That was an important win against 1. FC Köln. How did it feel for you during the game?
MI: It was an important three points. We knew it would be a difficult game. Cologne were keen also to get the points but we had a plan. I think that we are standing together better on the pitch. To take the lead in the first half and then win the game in the end was of course very good. I had a good feeling, everyone had a good feeling after the game - so yes, that was really, really important.
It was the first game where expectations are different than before against a promoted club. Did you feel this as well?
We talked about it in the team. We knew that people expect us to score three points against Cologne. But we also knew that one point would have been good for us depending on the course of the game. Of course, we always go to the pitch to get three points - especially here at home! I think we did a good job, put the Cologne team under pressure and had good counterattacks, from which we could then turn a corner into a goal. So yes, we came onto the field to win.
You've been here since the summer. How do you like Berlin and how do you like our club?
I feel very comfortable with Union and I feel comfortable with Berlin, and my girlfriend also likes it a lot here! When I arrived, we went straight to the training camp. We had a lot of new players at that time and we developed as a good group. I was very warmly welcomed. The training camp went well for me, then I had my first match against Augsburg, which was in between a small injury, but since then I have found my rhythm and feel very good at the moment.
You are really versatile on the park, but what is your favourite position?
(laughs) That's a good question. In Denmark I played to the right, as I do here in the 3-4-3 system. But there the number 9 dropped back much depper than here. There I was able to take a lot of shots on my left foot. And I think I played some of my best games for Union on the right side as well. But I think playing behind two strikers is good too. There are a lot of second balls for me, counter situations and finishes in the second phase. It's two different positions, two different mentalities, but I like to do both - it's based on the plan for the game.
