Wolfgang Schellenberg leaves Union for Burghausen

Wolfgang Schellenberg will not assume the position of Head of Academy at 1. FC Union Berlin. Starting next season, Schellenberg will take charge of the first-team and youth academy at his local club SV Wacker Burghausen.

The 46-year-old was set to take up the role at Union’s youth academy from 01.07.2018, but the club has accepted his wish to take up the head coach role at the Regionalliga team in the Bayern region.

“"I am very happy that 1. FC Union Berlin has given me the opportunity to return to my home region and not to put any obstacles in my way despite the agreed contract. Therefore, I’d like to express my thanks to those in Union’s management and wish all Union members / fans every success in the future," said Wolfgang Schellenberg, expressing his satisfaction at his return to Burghausen.

“I’m convinced that a football expert like Wolfgang Schellenberg would have helped us in the youth department. He wants to take another step for personal reasons and we do not want to stand in his way. We wish Wolfgang Schellenberg all the best and much success in his new position,” said Lutz Munack, managing director of the youth and amateur department.
