Support for affected people

On a daily basis, thousands of people are arriving in Berlin. They have had to flee their homes in Ukraine, leaving homes, friends and family behind. Adequate accommodation, care and support for those impacted by war is a challenge.

1. FC Union Berlin's foundation "Union Vereint. Schulter and Schulter" are providing support in many ways. Last weekend, 1. FC Union members helped prepare the Allende 2 shared accommodation, where refugees from Ukraine were able to move in on Saturday. Union's foundation is working with Kinderlachen e.V. (Children Laughing) and many other organisations to set up three Berlin apartments for refugees – which honorary Union member Michael Kölmel has made available. The flats are supplied with electricity and gas by Union sponsor M4Energy. The people will be looked after by Union's long-standing cooperation partner Internationaler Bund (IB). Union is also making space available to the IB in the Fanhaus construction site, as the IB's storage capacity for donations in kind is currently exhausted.

In the coming weeks, the care and employment of refugee children will become increasingly important. Therefore, 1. FC Union Berlin has prepared a football programme for children and is working closely with the Jewish Community of Berlin and other organisations in the field of refugee aid. The children are offered a varied and active programme under the professional guidance of Union coaches. They can choose between a full-day programme including lunch at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei or on an hourly basis in the morning or afternoon.

"The war in Ukraine makes us painfully aware that many people in the world have to fear for their lives every day. Humanity should determine all our actions, especially in these days when many refugees are dependent on our support, but also beyond that. We are joining forces to try and help alleviate the plight of people fleeing war and violence," said Union President Dirk Zingler, commenting on the wide-ranging help from the Union family.
