Players and fans toast promotion in Köpenick
Bundesliga is here:
On Wednesday, the promotion-winning 1. FC Union Berlin squad, staff and supporters celebrated the success in Köpenick and at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The celebrations were in full swing after Monday's game at home to VfB Stuttgart, but the official festivities kicked in on Wednesday as we mark the historic success.
In the afternoon, the players were welcomed by city mayor Michael Müller at the Roten Rathaus. That followed a fantastic boat trip down the Spree to Köpenick, with supporters greeting the players at various bridges en route. Upon arrival in Köpenick, thousands of fans had lined the banks of the river.
District Mayor Oliver Igel welcomed the promotion squad to Köpenick's own Town Hall in the early evening. By this point, gates were open to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei and thousands lined the streets from the Town Hall to the stadium.
More than 20,000 fans welcomed the squad at the ground and celebrations went off impressively.
