Honorary Member Wolfgang “Potti” Matthies celebrates 65th Birthday

The name Wolfgang “Potti” Matthies brings back memories of the flying Union-goalie of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Fans voted him to the club’s “Footballer of the Year” in 1982, 1983, 1986 and 1987. In 2006 they went even further and named him the club’s most valuable player of all times. He captains the Union-legends and is an honorary member of 1. FC Union Berlin since 2005.

“Potti” joined Union in 1971 and played his way into the first team after competing for the club’s youth teams and second team. He appeared in 253 league and cup games for Union and left the team in 1988. His nickname “Potti” resulted from his preference for a cup (German: Pott) of coffee over a cold beer.

Congratulations, Wolfgang – Eisern Union!
