Union's U19 side battle against the drop
Half-Season Review:
1. FC Union Berlin's under-19 squad, which plays in the regional Bundesliga, have ended the first half of their league campaign in 10th place. It's the second year that the Köpenick kids have been exposed to the strongest level of competition at this age group. At the close of 2018's action, Wili Weiße's team are four points above the relegation zone.
The season began in brilliant form for our youngsters who were on top of the table after four games. Union kept three early clean sheets — conceding for the first time in the 3-3 draw against Hertha Berlin who were crowned German champions in May. However, the early form was replaced by a challenging streak of games — six without a win.
Nevertheless, Union's U19 side has competed well against more established competition. They secured a final point on the last matchday of 2018 against Carl Zeiss Jena to stay clear of the drop zone. The movtivation is still to protect this level of football and continue the development of our young players.
Meanwhile, Union are progressing well in the Berlin Cup — known as the Nike Youth Cup — with a spot in the Last 16 already booked. Union smashed BSV Oranke 26:0 in the first round before going through against BFC Preußen with a 9-1 win.
The first league match scheduled for the new year is 03.02.2019 against VfL Osnabrück.
