Union lose Round 1 clash to Düsseldorf

1. FC Union Berlin went out of the German Youth Cup on Sunday, losing 0-3 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei to Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Around 1,600 supporters were in attendance in Köpenick as Union were rewarded for last season's impressive fourth-placed Bundesliga finish. The match got off to a disappointing start for Andre Vilk's U19 squad who lost two goals inside the first 20 minutes. Sebastian Papaila scored a penalty kick after 13 minutes before Benedict Diana netted six minutes later.

Union went down to 10 after the hour mark when captain John Liebelt was shown his second yellow card of the game. Union were brave and bold and looked more competitive despite the man down. However, with caution thrown to the wind in the closing stages, Düsseldorf took advantage on the break with Hendrik Fabian Strobl scoring in stoppage time.
