Peter Beke gave the away side the lead on nine minutes, but Willi Weiße’s side fought back impressively to level on 13 minutes. Tim Maciejewski’s set piece went all the way through and made it all square. However, Hamburg managed to secure the points with goals from Anssi Tapio Suhonen and Lukas Pinckert.
Hamburg move up to fourth, while 1. FC Union Berlin sits ninth in the table with eight points.
“We created too many opportunities for Hamburg today,” said coach Weiße after the defeat. “It would have been necessary to score many more goals to take a point from the game today.”
