Union Berlin secure important win at Werder Bremen
U19 Bundesliga:
First-half goals from Laurenz Dehl and Paul Petermann gave 1. FC Union Berlin an outstanding away win at SV Werder Bremen in the U19 Bundesliga Nord/Nordost.
"This victory feels great," said head coach Toni Mandl. "Especially because after the disappointing result of last weekend, the team has put the finishing touches together today and defended the lead passionately until the very end."
Despite leading 2-0 last week against Dynamo Dresden, the Köpenick club only managed to come away with a point. This time around, Union Berlin's dominance was rewarded against the third-best team in the league so far this season.
Union goalkeeper Nikolai Kemlein was busy from the start, making two important saves to prevent Bremen from edging ahead, However, this was the exception of the first half as Union took full control of the game. On 20 minutes, Union pressed the home side aggressively in their own half, won possession and then proceeded to get a penalty kick. Dehl stepped up and converted his 10th goal of the season.
About a quarter of an hour later, Petermann ran behind the home defence and was through one-on-one with Werder goalkeeper Philipp Jorganovic. The home keeper came out on top, but Petermann finished off the rebound. Seconds later, Jorganovic was faced with another one-v-one situation and he stood firm to keep the score at just 2-0.
Werder Bremen missed a penalty kick at the start of the second half, but their efforts were rewarded with an own goal from Stefan Rankic. Under pressure from a strong side, the Union defence fought bravely and battled to see through the 90 minutes.
With three points, Union consolidate their position in the Bundesliga, holding a seven-point cushion above the relegation zone with four games to go.
